KNOW THE SIGNALS
What risks and warning signs should be explained?
Common short-term issues include discomfort, bruising or tenderness at the cannula site. Important complications can include infiltration into surrounding tissue, vein inflammation, infection, bleeding, fluid or electrolyte problems and a reaction to an infused ingredient. Risk depends on the person and the treatment.
- Tell the clinician immediately about burning, increasing pain, swelling, leakage or tightness around the cannula
- Report rash, facial swelling, wheezing, dizziness, chest discomfort or sudden breathlessness at once
- Do not change the drip rate, touch connections or add anything to the infusion yourself
- Before the practitioner leaves, confirm who to contact if the site becomes red, hot, painful or swollen later
