Home IV Infection Control: Questions for the Visiting Team
A home setting does not remove the need for professional infection-control safeguards. Before an infusion is considered, ask how the service maintains safe practice outside a clinic. The patient’s role is to clarify arrangements, not sterilise equipment or take over a clinical procedure.

Ask who brings and controls the equipment
Confirm that the visiting professional brings the appropriate supplies and is responsible for checking them. CDC guidance emphasises safe injection practices, including new sterile needles and syringes and avoiding reuse between patients. Ask how single-use items, product identification and expiry checks are handled. Do not source unverified equipment yourself to reduce the service cost or assume an item is safe because it looks clean.

Clarify the space without taking on clinical tasks
Ask what ordinary preparation is requested, such as a clear area and access for the clinician, and tell the service if the home has practical constraints. The professional should decide whether the setting is appropriate. Keep pets and avoidable interruptions away as advised. You should not be asked to mix medicines, prepare a sterile field or manipulate a line from instructions in an article.

Know who removes clinical waste and answers concerns
Before treatment, ask how sharps and other clinical waste will be secured and removed under the service’s procedures. Do not leave needles in ordinary household rubbish or handle them to tidy up. Confirm who to contact about an exposure or safety concern, and keep the treating service’s details. This checklist does not certify a provider or teach insertion, disconnection or disposal techniques.

Common questions
Is a clean-looking needle enough?
No. Appropriate sterile, single-use equipment and professional safeguards are required.
Should I prepare the infusion myself?
No. Clinical preparation and administration belong to qualified professionals.
Can sharps go in household rubbish?
Do not do that. Ask the service to explain its safe waste arrangements.
Sources and information limits

Content policy and review statusQuestions before arranging an appointment?
Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
